Topeak Trunk great for most purposes! By MCH
This Trunk bag worked great on my 181-mile solo, single-day, unsupported trek down the C&O Canal Towpath (from Cumberland Maryland to Washington DC). It attaches securely with plenty of heavy velcro straps. I carried most of gear, tools, spares and food in the top part. The best feature is the collapsible panniers. I started the trip in the sub-freezing dark, with all my cold weather gear, and the panniers folded up and out of the way in their sleek zippered compartment. As the sun came up and temps climbed into the 50's, I was able to shed clothing, gloves, hats, etc. and load up the panniers. They hold a LOT of gear. You can even stash a certain amount of gear in the side pockets with the panniers folded up.
I am not sure if this trunk is the best choice for heavy bulky loads or long-term trekking. I suspect there are more sturdy (expensive) choices for that. But for the rider who wants a trunk, and periodically needs panniers, this is a great product. Build quality seems good for these purposes - again, you might find heavier fabric and stronger mounting frames in true pannier separates. I love this bag, and one really cool thing is that the inside is bright yellow! Minor, I know, but it was a nice surprise for me.
The product itself it really nice, and can hold a lot. Fits on my rack without issue, although I would suggest getting a wide rack for this baby. It's quite large.
The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because, while being amazing for space with the paniers out, there's not as much space as other bags without paniers when you have the paniers folded up. What I mean is, the paniers actually eat up space in the bag when they're not out. So, this bag lacks little pockets for things like a pump and gloves and my multi-tool. Things of that nature. You can argue, "You can just put it in the main compartment!", and that's absolutely true. However, I like to save the main compartment for the reasons I got the bag in the first place. Things like groceries, and a change of clothes, etc. It does me little good if it's full of little things. It's worth noting that even though the paniers fill up the side pockets, there's still quite a bit of room to fit small things in the side pockets, as long as you aren't wanting to take the paniers out often.

I keep this bag constantly mounted and have carried easily up to if not over the maximum weight limit for the rack. One can fit a surprising amount of groceries in it depending on your Tetris skills. This one is less expensive than the rack mount bag, and I have a rack mount bag without panniers and I often find myself leaving the bag and valuables on the bike when running errands due to laziness where with the rack mount I will remove the bag with ease and take it inside. It's a quick fix but, just note, the rack mounted bags are nice.
