My other half claimed my black leather messenger laptop bag while it sat unused, leaving me with a promotional canvas messenger bag when the time came to carry my work laptop around. I'm also a hiker who uses an Osprey day pack and a photo-hobbyist with a Tamrac Expedition 5 camera backpack. With a need for laptop bag and a familiarity of quality backpacks, I happily chose to put the Targus TSB77801US Pewter Laptop Backpack to the test.
The Targus TSB77801US Pewter Laptop Backpack, made in China, features a padded back with heat dissipating air mesh fabric, adjustable shoulder straps, and plenty of organizational opportunities. The backpack, constructed of a weather resistant nylon material, measures 12.75 x 7.5 x 18.75 inch / 32.39 x 19.05 x 18.75 cm on the outside and 10.5 x 1.65 x 15.25 inch / 26.67 x 4.19 x 38.73 cm inside.
As soon as the Targus TSB77801US Pewter Laptop Backpack arrived, I filled with my old laptop messenger bag contents in addition to another bag used for personal activities. All my stuff, including a laptop, tablet, three binders, a pair of Bluetooth headphones, and a bunch of little things, fit well and filled the bag. Then after 3 weeks of regular use, the heavy nylon handle I barely make use of started fraying apart on one side so much the handle is sure to break. Thankfully there is a lifetime limited warranty to fall back on, but this is too soon for an underutilized part to be failing.
The fully loaded Targus TSB77801US Pewter Laptop Backpack, weighing about 17.5 pounds, is reasonably distributed on the shoulders. The padded shoulder straps include a snap closure chest strap, both of which are adjustable. Adding a waist strap would be an improvement, although the omission of a waist strap wasn't noticeable on a mile long walk.
The Targus TSB77801US Pewter Laptop Backpack organizational capabilities are well thought out and effective. The pockets, enclosures, and compartments allow for storing items neatly and offer protection to expensive items. The laptop compartment has two pockets, one for up to a 16" laptop and the other for a tablet, plus a little room in between for a small binder or book. Peripherals and additional binders or books fit in the second large compartment. A smaller enclosure on the top outer side includes a headphones pass-through for listening to audio on the go. Additional zippered pockets include space for credit cards, pens, a hideaway mesh bottle holder, and more. When I need to grab something, I know just where to go, plus I can find everything quickly to get setup and ready for my day at the office.
The Targus TSB77801US Pewter Laptop Backpack works well for me. My items are protected and organized, plus the backpack distributes weight well. I'm disappointed by the fraying handle, however I hope I was just lucky enough to get a problem backpack. In the meantime, I will continue to use the backpack daily. If you're looking for a quality laptop backpack with effective organization, the Targus TSB77801US Pewter Laptop Backpack is worth looking into.

I have to admit that I'm a bit of a bag junkie. I love bags of all kinds and am always on the lookout for the "perfect" bag that I have yet to find. My favorites have been Ogio, Victorinox, Oakley, etc.. This backpack is not to the quality of those backpacks. I don't like all the nylon on this bag, I think it's ugly, and I think it's overpriced.
But.
This bag has several very good features too. It's a small/medium and lightweight. This would be perfect for carrying a small laptop/tablet/files to work. It's a simple/minimalist design. It does look just like the picture, so you can tell from the get-go if you like the looks or not. There are pockets galore. There are organizer pockets inside other pockets. There is a very sturdy D-ring (shown in picture) right up front that is perfect for clipping your keys or such onto. You can clip a carabiner onto this D-ring to hold other items. Love this feature. There are also 2 compression straps on each side - I love straps - this adds to usefulness. There is a very small water bottle type pocket on the bottom right side - too small for standard water bottles - but good for maybe some other smaller items. But on the left side is a zipper that holds a mesh water bottle holder that comes out - this one could hold a regular sized water bottle - but it's mesh and floppity. You'd have to find another way to secure the bottle so it doesn't flop around and fall out.
In conclusion - I prefer my Ogio 17 Gambit as my daily carry, but I definitely like this one for times when I want a smaller, lighter, more compact, simpler pack.. This backpack is fully functional, has a ton of pockets, lots of very good and essential features and I would recommend it. The weaknesses: Nylon and stitching may not be the strongest, longest lasting. Water bottle holder is weak/poorly designed. Ugly. Pricey. All these weaknesses still only took away 1 star in my mind because it's still a very good backpack that would do it's job well.Well made, excellent design By D. Otero
This is a great backpack! There are plenty of sections, pockets and compartments for organizing everything. The laptop section is well constructed with plenty of padding. If you are traveling by plane, having a specific section for your laptop makes going through security much easier! You can take out your laptop without everything else in your backpack shifting around - which makes putting your laptop back quick and easy. Sturdy, intelligent design. Highly recommend!
